Drought-busting rain spread north

Flooding hitting North Carolina.

Debby after rolling back ashore overnight is quickly moving curving to the northeast. It will spread its downpours into the central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic tonight and Friday..

Debby has produced a copious amount of rain across southeastern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, and eastern North Carolina. Total rainfall, once it departs the Carolinas will easily exceed a foot in many places, with a few spots possibly having more than 25 inches of rain.

Debby will continue to weaken over the next several days as it moves inland over the central Appalachians before merging with a cold front sliding into the Northeast on Friday. Even so, heavy rain fed by Debby’s access to warm water of the Atlantic will soak the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic Thursday and the Northeast and Atlantic Seaboard Friday.

Three to 6 inches of rain will accumulate from the central Appalachians of West Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic northward into the Northeast. This amount of rain will help burst a summer-long drought while also increasing the risk of flooding, especially in mountainous areas of West Virginia and western Virginia.
