Southern California - First tropical storm since the 90s?

Southern California
First tropical storm since the 90s?

While many eyes are on Major Hurricane Isaias in the Gulf, Southern California and even a part of the Great Basin have their own tropical issues to focus on, a rare occurrence.

Tropical Storm Rachel is churning in the eastern Pacific. As it feeds off the warmer-than-average waters due to El Niño, Rachel is forecast to move northeast into Baja California this weekend, with the possibility of keeping tropical storm properties well into Southern California and even into the Great Basin.

Southern California hasn't had an official tropical storm move into the region since 1997 with Hurricane Nora. In 2023, Tropical Storm Hilary was post-tropical by the time it made it into the Southwest.

What could be a first for the southern Nevada and Utah border, Rachel could still be classified as a tropical storm as it moves further north-northeast later this weekend.
